week 10
Hello everybody! Greeting from your favorite missionary Elder Shumway.
Everything is going great her in Pennsylvania! It's getting colder and
it will probably start snowing soon. The highlight of my week was
going to the priesthood restoration site which was sweet. My mission
is just so awesome! I'll send some pics.
The work is picking up a lot more. We have two with a baptismal date
and we want to have one more by the end of this week. This week I went
on exchange twice and both times I had to stay in my area. It was
really sweet cause I was in charge! Thursday was probably one of my
best days on my mission. I went on exchange with Elder Curtis who is
one of our zone leaders and is a boss. We talked to so many people it
was just great. One guy that I mainly talked to because we were both
talking to so many people we kind of had to go one on one with some
people. The young man I was talking to was named Cahan.
and I was talking to him about the restoration and about the Book of
Mormon. He seemed really interested. It was awesome.
We also had a great lesson on Saturday night. It was with one of our
investigators who's name is Cory. Cory is the girlfriend of our less
active man who we are also teaching. His name is Bro Moore. Cory
really enjoyed the lesson, but was a little overwhelmed. But we are
taking it slow. So we aren't asking her to be baptized yet until a few
more lessons in.
Dante and Danielle are still progressing. We are trying to go over
there at least twice a week. Ever since we have been teaching them we
always thought they were like a couple and living together. If that
was the case they would have to either get married or separate in
order to be baptized. But thankfully we just found out they are
brother and sister! So everything is still good.
Miss you all. Please don't hesitate on writing me back. I would live
anyone to write me. Anyways I miss all of you. I know that the church
is true and that the Book of Mormon is also true. I also know that the
priesthood of God is once again on the earth.
Elder Shumway
Mom,
Yep it's week 10! It's gone by really fast! I think of you a lot too.
I try and write good letters. I do have an I pad. It's pretty sweet. I
haven't seen a bill either for it. Yeah it's getting cold and it's only gonna
get colder. Thank you so much for sending the electric blanket and shoes. I haven't gotten them
yet so I'll be expecting them. I have not played ball lately cause we had to go to
Susquehanna for p day. We are playing today. Cindy does write really
long emails and a lot of it is just weird.
Dante and Danielle are making really great progress. We are super
excited! That's great to hear that the ward got some new converts!
Yeah I heard that Katrina is getting married. I got the invitation in
the mail.
The restoration site was really awesome. I will send you some
pictures. Ugh I wish I could play softball. I remember it being so
much fun. Carson would make a great pitcher. I didn't get that video
of josh I just got a picture. He is still skinny, but his hair looks
different. That's great that he is getting more confident. He's gonna
need that when he goes on his mission.
I know your phone number. I'll try and get a picture to you.
1: No cause it's to dangerous here. People steal them and a lot of
missionaries get hit. Also the mission says no.
2: The week of thanksgiving.
3: He is not dumb.

Hey Lila. I'm doing great how are you? Sorry you got a B! Schools do
that sometimes. Sounds like you're doing a lot of fun things. What are
you gonna be for Halloween? This week we went on exchanges twice. They
were both great exchanges. I'll send you a few videos of what we did.
It was also a very successful week in the way of missionary work.
Dante and Danielle are progressing a lot and we have another
investigator who we feel is almost ready for a date. I hope I get them
too.

Hey everybody. How's everybody doing? I hear that it's raining a little bit in Gilbert. Here it was snowing! This morning October 19, 2015 we woke up and there was snow on our grass! I am a little scared now. I don't like the cold! I'm an Arizona boy! But I will deal with it cause I know that this is where the Lord wants me to be.
So this week had a lot more success than last week. We had a referral sent to us a few weeks ago. A woman named Danielle wanted a Book of Mormon and so we stopped by and gave her one. We talked about it and set up an appointment for last Saturday at one. We discussed the first
discussion and really hit hard on the divinity and truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. We talked about how the Book of Mormon is the evidence of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a great lesson and another man was there who lives there and his name is Dante
and we both invited them to be baptized. They both accepted! I was so stoked! We are shooting for the November 15! I pray that they will be ready to be baptized on that day.
Something else that was awesome that happened was that a man named Bro Moore who is less active and had gotten in a motorcycle accident not to long ago and almost died. He broke a lot of bones in his body. Me and Elder Lewis have been meeting with him quite often and he loves it when we come. Anyways he came to church Sunday with his girlfriend who is not a member and I was really excited when he came. Hopefully this will be the beginning of something great.
Last night we were at a members house for dinner. And they had their grandpa over who is not a member. He told us that if we gave him a 50 digit long number he could give it back to us forward or backward just by memory! So we gave him one and he gave it back to us just as he said he would. It was really cool. He said we could do it with anything even with our missionary discussions. He told us to come back and he would help us remember those discussions. We will definitely take him up on that.
Love you all. The gospel is restored and there is a prophet of God on the earth and the Book of Mormon is the word of God.

P.S. I get to go to the priesthood restoration site tomorrow. This includes the sesquehana river. I am so excited for that!

Hey little brother. The week was great. We had a lot more success this week. We are almost out of ketchup. That's funny that mom tells you that cause I think she used to tell me that too and so do people here. I'm having a great time on my mission. I got an umbrella. Great job on your book report keep it up! That is for the picture. Miss you too.
Elder Shumway
Hey Lila. Week has been pretty great. Sorry to hear about school. I didn't really like school either, but it goes by really fast. That's to bad you had to take the tracker. Does the big car work now? Great to hear about the rain over there. I loved it when it rained. Here when it rains it's super cold rain and the weather is also super cold. We had fast Sunday last Sunday. I read that you might have a gift for me and would love it. I did buy an umbrella. The leaves are slowly turning colors. I'm gonna send you a leaf sometime probably. Miss you too.

Oct 12
This week was a pretty tough week. Wednesday was probably my worst day
ever on the mission. We had three "solid" appointments and we show up
to the door and knock and no one answers the door. For some reason we
are really opposite on the numbers, like we have one true investigator
but we have almost ten less actives we are teaching and a lot of those
people are coming back to church. It's really bitter sweet. We are
also providing a lot of service to people. Especially because in our
ward there are a lot of elderly people and they often need help.
Last Friday we helped a family install their new refrigerator. That
was a lot of work. They got really lucky with the price, they got it
for almost the third of the regular price, which was a great blessing.
That took up a lot of our day, but we were glad to do it cause we
didn't have any appointments that day.
Friday me and elder Lewis spent our day in a town called Hamburg.
We walked a lot, trying to talk to people and also visiting less
actives too. We planned to visit this less active woman who lived
about 2 miles away from where we were at the time. So we decided to
walk. But as we were walking it started raining a little and I didn't
have an umbrella. Once we got to her house it started pouring and I
got soaked. And she wasn't even home. So that was a bummer. I have a
video of us standing underneath a little shelter thingy with mailboxes
under them.
On Tuesday we spent our whole day in reading. We wanted to contact an
extremely less active man. His name was Jack and he has no teeth (lot
of people are like that around here) and he can talk your ear off. But
it's kind of funny cause he has a lisp because he has no teeth. We
plan to go back and actually try and teach him cause he has a lot of
doctrine messed up. He hasn't been to church in over 25 years and
thats probably why. After that we went and got ice cream at a place
called dairy swirl. A young woman in our ward works there and is able
to give us free ice cream. So that's pretty sweet(literally)!
Well hope you all are doing great. Miss all of you so much. Please
pray for investigators forums please. The gospel is true and I know
that. God speed!

Mom,
My week was pretty good. Some good parts and bad parts, but over all
it's was pretty good. Nice job canning, I remember those days. And
circle k would usually be better. There's none of this out here. I'm
really sad about that cause they are so cool. But there is a gas
station called wawa. They are a gas station but they also make
sandwiches and they are usually pretty good.
Yeah I sent her a letter. I'm happy that she got it. I hoped that she
would be excited. That's crazy that Sadie is getting married! I
thought she wanted to go on a mission? When is the wedding? Where is
it? She's probably really excited. Who is she marrying? Send them my
congratulations. I probably won't be able to come. Hopefully sis slade
gets better by the time the wedding happens.
I'm in the same place with the same companion. And now Elder Lewis is
district leader. I did get that package with the home made cookies.
Thank you so much for that. I really like that new sweater.
Did you ever get a picture/text about me from an unknown number last
week? If you did can you respond? The number was from Sister Wojcicki.
She is a member in the ward and she is pretty cool. They feed us all
the time. And I think last week she took a picture re if me while I
was at her house and sent it to you and you never responded.
I had forgotten that Jeff had already left. I sent him an email a
while ago but he never responded. But I'm pretty sure he will do well.
Maybe if he responds I can give him some advic. Did Ben Steele come
home? I don't see his name in LDS tools anymore. Tanner emailed me
last week and said he did receive his call. He's been called to the
Illinois Chicago mission and he leaves Nov 11. I was so excited
went he told me that. He will be a great missionary.
Thanks for having Teryn over. He is an awesome guy and a great friend.
He emailed me and told me that he went to conference and also sent
some pictures. He actually went with that sister missionary who used
to serve in our ward and her and Teryn kind of had a "thing". But yeah
it looked like he had a great time. Make sure he goes on a mission and
make sure he is there to skype on Christmas.
Teaching actual investigators is a little slow, but ones with less
actives and recent converts are going really great. And also service
is going really great. We did some more service for the sweet older
woman in our ward (there's a lot of them) her name is sister Roland
and she had us do a some yard work. Mainly cutting away some large
bush. I really soaking wet last week. I forgot my umbrella and it
rained a whole bunch. I'll send you a video. The weather is cooling
down a lot. I hear different things from locals around here that say
that it might be a heavy or mild winter.
Ugh that's so frustrating about dad. I wish it would go away. Tell him
thanks for being such a trooper.
1: Pretty well. We are getting more and more comfortable with each
other. But we still have hardly anything in coming.
2: I used it yesterday for my fast offerings. :)
3: Haven't gotten them yet but will hopefully get them Tues or Wed.Wednesday.

Hey Lila! Thanks for the email. A break sounds really nice. Glad you
got to babysit and got paid some big bucks! Stake conference sounded
fun. Sorry you have to go back to school. But it will go by so fast.
Even though it doesn't seem like it, it will. I would love to have
some of your drawings. I got a package with the cookies in it. But
that was it. I think there's a few more of them at the mission office.
It is getting pretty cold. But what cold is to an Arizona boy is hot
to somebody out here. Thanks for following asking the dogs on walks.
You wanna know what specifically happened this week? Ok I'll tell you.
I got rained on a lot. We helped some member install their new
refrigerator. We have been teaching a lot of less actives and recent
converts not so many investigators. Wednesday was probably my worst
day in the mission. We had three appointment set up and I was really
excited but we show up to the appointments on time and we knock on the
door and nobody answers it. It is super frustrating! But yeah that's
just some things that happened.

Hello everybody. Greetings f ok super smelly, cold, and wet Reading, Pennsylvania. I've been here for 6 weeks now. It's gone by so fast! I love being a missionary! Here in the PPM ( Pennsylvania Philadelphia mission) it's starting to get cold.it rained a whole bunch last week. I guess it is from the hurricane down south.
So wasn't conference amazing! There were so many great talks. I really loved it. So other than conference this weekend, it's been a pretty busy week. We had zone conference last Tuesday and we got a device put in our car that tells us if we are going to fast on the road and it's really annoying. But it still helps us drive safely I guess.Wednesday we walked to a town called Blandon which is about five miles away. It was interesting cause there were several times that there would be road kill that we would have to maneuver around. We went there hoping to contact a lot of people, but we didn't contact as many people as we were hoping, but we got some exercise out of it.
On Saturday between sessions we went up to an all you can eat pot pie banquet. This church is not of our faith and it felt really awkward because there were people who went around with a pot of coffee and asked us if we want some and we always say no thank you. So that was really awkward. So wasn't conference amazing! There were so many great talks. I really loved it. So other than conference this weekend, it's been a pretty busy week. On Thursday we found this sandwich shop by our house and we tried it out. So I got a cheese steak and it was really good. I have a pic I will send. I felt so fat afterwards though. I really want to go back and get another one. I probably will.
Let me share my testimony. I know that the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only true church upon the earth. I know that it holds the priesthood of God and that all those keys are held by the prophet of God, Thomas S Monson. I love you all and I love being a missionary.
Love Elder Shumway
Mom,
Good afternoon. It was an awesome conference. I actually was singing
during a lot of those songs. I was thinking the same thing when I was
watching too, that you were watching it as well. There were some
amazing talks. Sis Slade is a strong woman. I haven't sent her
anything yet but right after I'm done emailing I am righting a letter
to her. If you don't believe me I am looking at the paper and I
envelope right now. I am really grateful that she sent those things tome. I will definitely thank her.
I know dad's birthday was Friday. He's 44 right? I did see a firehouse the other day, but it was out of our area. I saw it because we had zone conference in Nazareth( there's also cities called Bethlehem and Lebanon, it's pretty cool cause they are from the bible!). I would have loved the left overs. Just a minute ago I ate two meatball subs for lunch. I'm glad dad was happy. How are his headaches doing?
Mom, I would love to tell you who we are teaching but really no one is progressing. And people cancel on us a lot. Or there not home when we show up. So we are working a lot with less actives and I actives, and also contacting some potential investigators. So I guess people we are
legitimately teaching are none. It's really frustrating and sad. But I will tell you about some other people. We have been teaching a less active man. His name is Paul. He is super cool. The last missionaries that were in this area wouldn't even get in his house. And we come by sometimes and he's always so friendly and let's us in and we teach him too. He says he really wants to come back to church. Because he has two daughters who he wants to be an example to. Hopefully we can get him to come out. I'm really excited for him.
You want my testimony? Well here it is, this church is the only true church on the face of the earth. I know the priesthood of God is once again on the earth and that it was restored through the prophet of God. Who is Joseph Smith. I know he did see God and Jesus Christ on that spring day in 1820. I know that he translated the Book of Mormon by the power of God. And I know that we are led by a prophet of God today, Thomas S Monson. He is the mouthpiece of the Lord. I know it!
Sorry if that might of sounded harsh but that is truly what I know to be true and I regret not sharing my testimony before. So I apologize, I will bear my testimony more frequently now.
Good for Scott to get married. Tell him congrats for me. And I know what you mean. With the temple getting closer and closer to being completed I am really getting excited. President Anderson got to go inside of it with president Russell M Nelson a few weeks ago back when he was dedicating the priesthood restoration site. And president said
that the temple already looks amazing! And we will not be
disappointed.
Thanks for sending me stuff. I will probably get those packages this week some time. I really appreciate it.
1: Her it rained for about three days strait. And back home it just rained for a little amount of time but a lot.
2: I don't want to keep jumping on the band wagon but I like Elder Hollands talk and I liked Elder Hales talk too.
3: I watched conference with the Smiths at their home.
